Mennolt Regtien has spent more than 20 years in the storage and pallet racking business in Australia. Before that, he worked for around 10 years as a consultant to small to medium businesses across growth and development, and prior to that was involved in venture capital and startups, including helping Australasian companies enter Asian and US markets. So, in broad terms, he has spent the better part of 40 years working with businesses on growth, productivity, strategy and practical operational improvement.
What that experience has led him to understand is that while many businesses may have warehouses or storage areas, no two businesses are ever the same. They all operate differently. They have different issues around stock coming in, stock going out, safety, compliance and the simple question of how to make better use of the space they already have. Because Mennolt has worked across so many different industries and so many different types of businesses over the years, he is able to get into each client’s operation fairly quickly, understand what their particular issues are, and get into the meat of what the problem is and what the solution might look like.
That is probably the part of the work he enjoys most. One business may be dealing with an issue that looks similar to another on the surface, but when you get into it, they are often dealing with it in a different way because of their background, their workflow, their staff, their products or the way the business has grown. That variety is what makes the work interesting, and it is also what helps shape better storage outcomes.
Mennolt’s background in business consulting also means he tends to look beyond the storage system itself. During his consultancy years, he worked mainly with owners and general managers of small to medium businesses, often breaking the business down into its different parts, understanding the flow and connection between them, and then helping improve productivity across those areas. In warehousing, that same thinking still applies. The focus may now be on storage, workflow and warehouse productivity, but the broader business questions are still there. How does stock move through the operation? Where is time being wasted? Where is space being lost? What is slowing the business down?
That wider perspective is often valuable because when you are in the business every day, it is easy not to see the obvious. Having some distance, and being able to draw on what has worked in other industries or other businesses, can help start a better conversation. As Mennolt explains it, sometimes it is simply a matter of saying, “Well, look, I’ve seen this before. This is how other people have dealt with it. Do you think that might work?” And from there, you can start to stimulate a useful discussion about what the business actually needs.
Today, Mennolt brings that mix of storage knowledge, business experience and practical problem-solving to his work with QLD Storage Systems. His focus is not just on fitting racking into a warehouse. It is on understanding how the business operates, what pressures it is under, where the inefficiencies are, and how the right storage solution can support productivity, safety and growth over time.
