Why Professional Pallet Racking Inspections Are Important
The Australian standards encourage warehouse owners and operators to regularly inspect their own pallet racking, but they require a third party to inspect the racking annually. And there’s a very good reason for that.
When you’re busy running your business, you just don’t see it. Damage becomes wallpaper. You walk past the same racking every day and you stop noticing when something isn’t quite right, unless you really know what you’re looking for.

We’re specifically looking for damage, lack of alignment, racking that’s not level, beams that are overloaded or deflecting, and impact damage. Those are the sorts of things that can sit there for months or years without anyone picking them up.
What Inspections Are Designed to Prevent
The obvious one is pallet racking collapse. That’s always the big risk.
But beyond that, inspections are about preventing injuries to staff, product loss, and damage to stock caused by racking that isn’t performing the way it should. There’s also a lot of secondary damage that people don’t think about.
Most of the time forklifts cause the damage to racking, its also common to see damage from overloading. We also see damage to concrete floors, walls, fire doors, hydrants, fuse boxes, and parts of the building itself. All of that is expensive to fix, particularly if you’re in a leased facility.
Insurance and Compliance Risk
Generally speaking, businesses look to insure themselves from damage to product and staff injury. However, if an insurer were to find that the racking on site wasn’t compliant, you can easily imagine a situation where that claim is questioned or potentially not paid out.
From a compliance point of view, pallet racking inspections sit under Australian Standard AS 4084:2023, which specifies annual inspections. If a Workplace Health and Safety inspector identifies an issue, you’re often given a very short window to fix it.
If there’s an incident and the issue hasn’t been addressed, or a notice has been ignored, that’s where things can escalate into penalties or fines.
How Often Should Pallet Racking Be Inspected?
Under the Australian Standards, pallet racking must be inspected annually by a competent third party.
On top of that, internal inspections are a good idea. We would encourage larger warehouse operations to do their own visual checks, just looking for obvious damage. That might be monthly or quarterly, depending on how busy the warehouse is.
Even then, things get missed. I was on a site recently where there were two damaged beams, and the person responsible for safety was genuinely shocked when I pointed them out. They just hadn’t noticed them.
Who Can Carry Out Pallet Racking Inspections?
There’s no specific licence or formal qualification for pallet racking inspections. What matters is whether the person is competent.
In my view, that means someone with at least two to three years’ experience installing pallet racking, designing pallet racking, or working closely with racking systems and understanding what they’re meant to do.
One of the biggest issues we see is where racking was originally designed and installed correctly, and then over time it’s been reconfigured internally. Beams get moved, load weights change, layouts are altered. In some cases, the racking ends up non-compliant, even though it still looks fine.
That’s why independent inspections matter. They look at what’s actually there now, not what the racking was meant to be when it was first installed.
