Second-Hand Pallet Racking
Typical Storage Setups
Most pool and spa operations use a combination of selective pallet racking for palletised goods and longspan shelving for smaller items that are picked by hand. Workbenches are commonly incorporated for picking, packing, repairs, and general workshop tasks. Depending on the size of the business, mezzanine floors are also used, often for storing larger items such as filters or overflow stock.
In some cases, cantilever racking is used for storing long items such as pipes and plumbing materials. Storing pipe vertically on cantilever racking allows businesses to keep materials off the ground and hold much higher volumes than if those items were simply laid out on the floor.

Common Zones
Many pool and spa businesses operate from a mixed-use space, with a retail showroom at the front and a storage or warehouse area at the back, often accessed via a roller door. In these environments, the layout is usually driven by how customers, staff, and deliveries interact with the space.
Near the roller door, it’s common to see workbenches, workshop areas, and packing benches, particularly where customers may be dropping off or collecting items. Longspan shelving is often used here for items being sent out by courier. Further back in the facility, selective pallet racking is typically used for bulk palletised stock, both incoming and outgoing.
Supporting Daily Operations
Many pool and spa businesses also support field technicians who travel to customer sites daily. In these cases, mezzanine floors are sometimes used to provide secure parts storage above, while the area underneath is dedicated to repairs, maintenance, and preparation work. Securing higher-value items on upper levels can reduce the risk of theft while keeping frequently used areas accessible and safe.

Storage and Workflow Challenges
The most common challenge in the pool and spa industry is maximising available space while balancing competing needs. Incoming goods, bulk storage, repairs and maintenance and outgoing distribution all compete for the same physical footprint. Without careful planning, one area can easily impact the efficiency of another.
Clever warehouse design is critical to ensuring that each part of the operation has the space it needs to function productively, without creating bottlenecks or unnecessary handling.
Planning for Growth
One of the most common issues we see in the pool and spa industry relates to budget-driven decisions that limit future growth. While budget constraints are understandable, designing a storage system only around current needs can quickly become a problem as the business grows. Within two to three years, many operators find themselves needing to reconfigure their warehouse or consider relocating, which is both disruptive and expensive.
Our approach is to ensure that the final design has enough capacity and flexibility to support future growth without impacting productivity. By understanding product volumes, flow, seasonality, and how goods move through the warehouse, we can design storage systems that work now and continue to work as the business evolves.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long will it take to install my new storage system?
The time it takes to install your new storage system will depend on the size and complexity of the system. Larger, more complex systems such as racking may take longer to install; however, your storage specialist can give you an estimated time frame for your specific system.
Should I opt for racking or shelving for my business?
It really depends on what you’re storing and how often you need to access it. If you have heavy or awkwardly-shaped items, racking might be a better option. If you need to access your stored items frequently, shelving might be a better choice.
Do I need a pallet racking audit?
A pallet racking audit is a good idea if you’re considering installing or upgrading your pallet racking system. The audit will assess your current system and make recommendations for improvements. It’s a good way to ensure that your pallet racking is safe and fit for purpose.
