I can’t honestly say that I haven’t personally seen a serious incident that happened purely because one inspection didn’t take place. But I think it’s fairly natural to infer what happens when pallet racking systems aren’t inspected, repaired, or maintained over time.

If there’s continued negligence, or simply a lack of repair and maintenance on racking systems, that is inevitably going to lead to some sort of problem down the track.

We’ve inspected sites where the racking is so old that the whole system is no longer compliant. In some cases, the racking has been there for decades. You eventually get to a point where you just have to say no. There are sites where the racking looks like it’s been around since Adam was walking around with Eve in the Garden of Eden.

Any metal product, any steel product, after a period of time, becomes fatigued. Pallet racking is no different. There is a natural life to it, and you can’t just assume it lasts forever.

Even beams that were designed for heavy-duty loads reach a point where they’re no longer performing at the same level they did ten or fifteen years ago. At some stage, you simply have to say no, this beam needs to be replaced. It’s not doing what it was designed to do anymore.

Generally speaking, most businesses insure themselves for levels of property damage and staff incidents. However, I can easily imagine a situation where, if an insurance company finds that there is non-compliant racking on site and it was involved with a claim, that claim could be questioned or potentially not paid out.

That becomes a real issue if an incident occurs and it’s later identified that inspections weren’t being carried out or that known issues weren’t addressed. At that point, the conversation changes from what happened to why the racking was allowed to remain in that condition.

It’s not something you want to be finding out after the fact.

Inspections aren’t just about ticking a box. They’re about awareness. Knowing what condition your racking is in, understanding what’s nearing the end of its useful life, and being able to make informed decisions before something becomes unsafe or non-compliant.
