We caught up with Mennolt from Queensland Storage Systems to discuss the most common and versatile racking system used in warehouses across Australia, Selective Pallet Racking.
This system forms the backbone of most warehouse setups, offering flexible and easily accessible storage plus simple reconfiguration as warehouse operational requirements change. As Mennolt explained, “Selective pallet racking is what you’ll see in nearly every warehouse storage environment. It’s simple, it’s reliable, and it works for almost any type of product or layout.”
What Is Selective Pallet Racking
“Selective pallet racking is the standard pallet storage system you see in most warehouses,” Mennolt explained. “It’s a modular setup made up of upright frames and horizontal beams that create levels for storing pallets one pallet deep. A forklift can access every pallet directly from the aisle, which is why it’s called selective.”
He went on to explain that each pallet sits on a pair of load beams, supported by the uprights, creating a simple but strong and stable storage level. “You can have multiple bays in a row, each a few pallets wide, and you can build it up as high as your warehouse and forklift allow,” he said. “It’s all adjustable too, so depending on the weight of pallets and the overall load capacity of the racking, you can move the beam levels up or down depending on your pallet height.”
The system is designed for maximum accessibility, not density. “Every pallet is immediately reachable,” Mennolt said. “That makes it ideal for warehouses that store lots of different products or that need to pick and restock quickly. You’re not having to move other pallets out of the way just to get to that one pallet you really need.”
He added that load capacities typically range from 500 kilograms to around 4 tonnes per level, with frames going from 2.4 up to 9m high. “It’s a really versatile system,” he said. “We can, within reason, configure it to suit almost any pallet size, weight, or layout.” The pallet racking plan is designed with load capacities specific to any warehouse needs both in terms of forklift specification, pallet weights and the type of operations in the warehouse. “”Clearly every business is different so we understand the pallet racking requirements for a distribution center are quite different to say, a boatbuilder. We design the pallet racking layout with these different needs in mind. Selective racking design can be flexible enough for virtually any business”
How Selective Pallet Racking Works
The biggest advantage of selective pallet racking is accessibility. Every pallet can be reached directly without having to move others out of the way.
“As the name suggests, it’s selective,” Mennolt said. “You can pick any pallet at any time. That makes it ideal for businesses that carry a wide variety of stock or that need to access different products quickly.”
It’s also one of the easiest systems to reconfigure. “If your stock changes or you move to a new warehouse, you can adjust it, extend it, or even relocate it entirely,” he added. “That flexibility is a big reason why it’s so essential and popular.”
Where Selective Pallet Racking Is Used
“You’ll find selective racking in just about every type of warehouse,” Mennolt said. “It’s used in factories, distribution centres, bulky goods showrooms, and even smaller sites that want to add simple mezzanine storage areas above the racking for extra product storage.”
The system is compatible with all standard forklifts and material handling equipment, making it suitable for both high-turnover and mixed-product environments. “Whether you’re moving hundreds of pallets a day or just need organised storage for slower stock, it all works,” Mennolt explained.
Typical Design and Dimensions
Frames typically range from 2.4 to 9m high, increasing in 600mm increments, while beams usually span between 2.6 and 4.8m, stepping up in roughly 300 to 400mm intervals.
“These sizes cover almost every warehouse requirement,” Mennolt said. “We can design a pallet racking configuration to suit whatever pallet size, weight, or clearance your operation requires.”
Benefits of Selective Pallet Racking
“Selective racking gives you the best mix of accessibility, strength, and flexibility,” Mennolt said. “It’s cost-effective, quick to install, and works in nearly any environment.”
Because each pallet position can be accessed individually, it also supports FIFO (First In, First Out) stock rotation. “That’s a big advantage for warehouses that handle perishable or time-sensitive goods,” he added.
